The UMLSCC is a contest for MLS teams in which the Champion must defend the title every game. This is a fun-fan friendly way to raise interest in MLS games. The UMLSCC started when the San Jose Clash defeated DC United 1-0 in the first ever MLS game 1996. Since then the title has changed 155 times in 412 games. The current UMLSCC are Los Angeles. This is LA's 14th title.

Old Quakes beat New Quakes

Stuart Holden won it for Houston in the 93rd minute and the Dynamo won 2-1 over expansion San Jose. While a draw would have helped Houston retain the title, it would also have been San Jose's first "result" in UMLSCC play. The Dynamo won despite losing Kamara in the 11th minute to an ejection. At the time of the ejection Houston was already up 1-0. It took until the 68th for the Earthquakes to capitalize on their advantage.

When Houston got the game winner at the death, it was almost the death of San Jose's MLS playoff hopes.

Houston will next host Los Angeles on Saturday. This will be the third meeting in Houston between the two teams. Almost exactly a year ago LA won 2-1 and took the title from the Dynamo. In fact, LA has an extremely good record on the road against Houston and the former Quakes team. They are 4-2-1(WDL) on the road. But actually, when Houston(and the former Quakes) are on road they have 3-2-1 record against LA. Both are good especially when the home team wins at an almost 2 to 1 rate.

A Houston win this weekend can also help to eliminate LA from the MLS playoffs. The Dynamo have already clinched a playoff spot in the West.
