2006 UMLSCC wrapup
In 2006 there were 32 UMLSCC games. The home team won 21 while the road team only won 6 times. There were 5 draws.
The title changed hands a record 18 times. Houston started off the season as the UMLSCC. In all 10 different teams held the title with only DC United and Real Salt Lake left out. RSL has still never even played a UMLSCC game. DC United did challenge twice but both ended up draws - and thus no title. FC Dallas held the title the most, 3 times, but still could not get past their block of never having won that 2nd game while defending the title. However, in truth, only 2 teams held onto the UMLSCC for more than 2 games. The NY Red Bulls defended 4 times before losing to Columubs. And Chivas USA won their first ever title and defended it 2 times before dropping it to FC Dallas. Chivas USA actually defeated the Galaxy for the first time ever in that title reign. Chivas would go on to win the title again later in the season.
The title was won at home 14 times this season and only 4 times on the road. The record of the Club Champion at home was 7-1-3. On the road champion was a measly 2-4-15. Overall the Club Champion only won 9 games and drew 5 while dropping the title 18 times. The 2006 season is tied with the 2001 season for the fewest title defense, 14.
The home team outscored the visitors 53-27.
Currently the Club Champion has not won a game in 12 consecutive matches. Not since NY defeated KC 1-0 back on July 22nd. Also the title has changed hands 9 times in the last 10 games with only Colorado holding onto the title with a 0-0 draw in LA. This stretch of 10 games is the worst ever in UMLSCC.
The 2007 season will see a new participant for the UMLSCC title as Toronto FC joins the MLS ranks. The UMLSCC will kick off the 2007 season on Sunday April the 8th when Los Angeles travels to Houston. It will be UMLSCC vs MLS Cup Champion.
