First Draw in 14 games allows NY to keep title
On July 29th Chris Henderson put RBNY on top of the Dynamo in the 67th but the Houston side converted a PK just 3 minutes later to pull even. The match ended 1-1 and so did the UMLSCC 13 game "un-drawn" streak.
The Red Bulls held onto the title and are now the longest title holders this season having successfully defended the UMLSCC for 3 games. It is the longest title run since Colorado had 4 successful defenses in 2005 before losing to LA.
Now RBNY will sit on the title until the 16th of August ... yes ... 18 days without playing an MLS match. Granted, part of the break is for the All-Star Game. NY did defeat Wilmington in the USOC on August 2nd. They also host European Champions FC Barcelona on August 9th. The game can be sort of a "Clash of Champions" although I think we'll have RBNY bill this as a Non-Title Match Up; an interpromotional clash. Besides, I don't think Barca will be putting their CL title up for grabs :)
Anyhow, the next UMLSCC game for the engergry drink team is against MLS powerhouse DC United. That game will be in NY where the Red Bulls are 8-3-4 as the home champion and 16-7-11 overall. DC, while on top of league at the moment, is the worst ever road challenger in UMLSCC history. Their record 0-2-10, failing all 12 attempts to grab the title. This will be the 5th time DC has played in NY. The previous 4 games have been split at 2 wins apiece with the title only changing hands once. The teams have played 6 times in DC with NY leading that series 2-3-1. NY leads overall by a slim margin of 4-3-3. Of those 10 games, the title has only changed hands twice with NY being crowned new Champion both times.
