The UMLSCC is a contest for MLS teams in which the Champion must defend the title every game. This is a fun-fan friendly way to raise interest in MLS games. The UMLSCC started when the San Jose Clash defeated DC United 1-0 in the first ever MLS game 1996. Since then the title has changed 155 times in 412 games. The current UMLSCC are Los Angeles. This is LA's 14th title.

TFC take on New York

Thursday is the 17th UMLSCC game to take place on that day of the week. This is the first time Toronto will play on a Thursday. The home team is 8-2-6. The Champion is also 8-2-6 on Thursday. The title has changed hands 6 times on a Thursday but only once has it been won by the road team, that was Dallas in 2007(the last time the title changed hands on a Thursday. New York has a 1-0-3 record on Thursdays. The three losses all as challenger. The home champion on Thursdays is 3-1-1.

Toronto's overall record is 3-2-3 and are 0-2-2 as the Champion. At home TFC are 2-0-1. New York has played in the most UMLSCC games. They have played 89 times. Their overall record is a losing one, but they have the most title reigns(17 of them). NYRB's record is 31-21-37. On the road NY is 13-13-25. As a challenger they are 17-9-20 but have won 8 of their titles on the road with a record of 8-5-13.

In the MLS standings Toronto has 9 points and is in 4th place while NY has 7 points in 5th. A win by TFC puts them in a tie for first with Columbus(before this weekends games of course). a win for NY puts the MLS East race into a virtual deadlock where 6 teams will be within 3 points of first.

TFC are a better team than last year for sure. NY still has some good talent, but I think TFC might keep the title for another week.
